Cancellable monthly vs. an annual contract — what is standard for caretaker services?
Many caretaker firms will ask you to sign a contract with a term of twelve months or more and long notice periods. That is common practice in the industry — but it is by no means the only option. Here is what to look out for when it comes to the contract term.
Why long contract terms are common in this industry
For providers, long contract terms mean they can plan ahead — staff and vehicles can be kept reliably busy when the customer base is fixed for months in advance. For customers, though, the flip side is this: if you are unhappy with the quality, you are often tied into the contract for months before you can switch.
The case for a rolling monthly contract
- No risk if the work is poor: if the quality is not up to scratch, switching is straightforward instead of sitting out a notice period for months.
- The provider has an incentive to keep earning your confidence — not only when the contract is signed, but on every single visit.
- Flexibility when your requirements change, for example when the area to be looked after or the scope of work changes.
What to check before you sign
Ask about the notice period before you sign — a quote rarely says “cancellable monthly” of its own accord, so you usually have to raise it yourself. A reputable provider should be able to answer that question openly.
In summary
A long contractual commitment is not a mark of quality — quite the opposite: providers who are confident that their customers will stay satisfied can afford to do without long notice periods.
